The Faculty of Architecture, Architectural Engineering and Urban Planning (LOCI) and the Louvain research institute for Landscape, Architecture, Built environnement (LAB) are organised over 3 different sites: Louvain-la-Neuve, Brussels and Tournai. These diverse locations are conducive to the development of research interests linked to multiple local realities.
The post will be based more specifically in Louvain-la-Neuve, but activities are likely to take place on any of the three sites of the LOCI faculty and the LAB institute.
Post description
Within the Faculty of Architecture, Architectural Engineering and Urban Planning (LOCI) and the Louvain research institute for Landscape, Architecture, Built environment (LAB), Science and Technology Sector, this position will include the following teaching, research and community service duties:
- Teaching
You will teach mainly in the field of architectural technology, construction and the environmental performance of buildings, in the various study cycles managed by the faculty. You will also be expected to supervise master’s theses.
You will contribute with your skills to the teaching and supervision of architectural projects. Teaching will take place mainly in Louvain-la-Neuve, but teaching activities may also take place at any of the other LOCI faculty sites (Brussels - LLN - Tournai).
- Research
You will develop your research activities, including the lead of research programmes, in the field of architectural technology, construction and the environmental performance of buildings.
You will be responsible for the supervision of PhD theses
In the context of the environmental, ecological, energy, economic, climatic and social transition that characterises our times, you will carry out your activities at the intersection of innovative construction techniques, life cycle analysis, analysis of stocks and flows of materials, and physics applied to the design and management of the built environment.
Your areas of expertise and specialisation could lie in one or more of the following research dimensions:
- Innovative technological processes for the construction, monitoring and renovation of built spaces.
- Life cycle analysis of materials and resources (LCA): circular economy, grey energy, environmental flows of built stocks, etc.
- Physics applied to the built environment, materials and systems technology, environmental performance, sustainable and regenerative design.
- Digital modelling tools (parametric, virtualisation, generative design, etc.) for the technical design, analysis and management of the built environment.

Once tenured, you will carry out various service activities and responsibilities within the institution, such as being a member of a programme committee or examination committee, or having management responsibilities within the faculty or research institute.
You will also contribute to serving society, particularly in the economic, social, cultural or development cooperation fields. Finally, you will ensure, through research and teaching activities, the university’s international visibility.
Who we’re looking for
- Education
You have a PhD in Engineering Science, Architectural Science, Environmental Engineering (or a comparable field). You have completed it with an extended study period abroad or significant expérience outside your home institution.
- Experience
You have a proven track record in university teaching, with evidence where possible by formal evaluations. Your scientific experience is demonstrated by publications of international standing.
You have a forward-looking vision and care capable of excellence, innovation and leadership in teaching and research.
- Skills
You are comfortable working as part of a team of academics and integrate research results into your teaching. You are capable of conducting high-level scientific research, from obtaining funding to team management. You are creative, open to pedagogical innovation and multidisciplinary.
You can communicate in French and English. If this is not the case, you undertake to acquire a command of these two languages within two years of taking up your position. Knowledge of other languages is an asset.
Specifically:
- You have a master's degree in architecture or architectural engineering.
- You have recognized experience in scientific research, with funding and research publications of international standing.
- You demonstrate methodological rigour and knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methods.
Additional assets:
- You have recognized experience in the professional practice of architecture or architectural engineering.
- You have the skills to combine technical knowledge and practice with architectural culture, in terms of context, use of space and aesthetics.
- You have emerging or proven experience in academic leadership: tenured position within a faculty, a university, research management, etc.
- You have an active knowledge of international research networks, but also of the Belgian context, and of the environmental, ecological, energy, economic and social issues linked to the construction sector of today and tomorrow.
What we offer
- Tenure after positive assessment of the probationary period – typically four years. This type of career entitles you to a public sector pension.
- Appointment as lecturer or professor according to your previous academic experience, as determined by the Rectoral Council.
- Teaching load capped at 90 hours for a full-time tenure-track position, and 150 hours once tenured.

- A start date of 1 September 2025 at the earliest.
